I love coffee.
I love how versatile it is. I start most days with a cortado, grab a cold brew as an afternoon pick-me-up, and an affogato is my idea of a diet-friendly dessert.
Asking someone how they take their coffee can tell you a lot about them. The person who drinks black coffee is bold, not boring! There are those who like a macchiato and others who prefer a "macchiato". Don't know the difference? Just ask the barista next time you aren't sure what to order.
I love how coffee can be private for those who have to have their morning cup or three before they can even begin to interact with the outside world, or it can be social for the early-bird who takes a morning meeting at the café before heading into the office.
Another reason I love coffee is because of all the great friends that I have made thanks to it. I have spent countless hours (and dollars) in coffee shops around the country and the world.
Coffee is cultural and nowhere is that more true than here in Washington State: home of Starbucks and snowy days where the sun sets at three in the afternoon! We may not grow coffee here, but we do everything else with it.
Because coffee (and tea) are grown in more tropical regions, they are inherently international products. In this issue, we have sought out players in the Inland Northwest's caffeine scene who have international connections themselves.
