Jeff Fijolek - Publisher - Edible Inland Northwest

Letter from the Editor

Spokane and the surrounding areas are growing at an astounding rate.

Some may measure this growth in terms of local home prices and cars on the freeway. At Edible Inland Northwest, we choose to measure in new breweries, bigger crowds at farmers markets, restaurants opening in different parts of town and all the stories that come with them.

Our team of local contributors are passionate, knowledgeable and dedicated to sharing the best and brightest of the Inland Northwest with our readers. We seek to provide background, context and local tips in a way that tells the story of our local food culture and the growth of Spokane while encouraging our friends and neighbors to go out and experience all that this region has to offer.

Contribute to Edible Inland Northwest

Edible Inland Northwest is a member of Edible Communities, a growing, award-winning network of more than 90 independently owned, locally focused food publications across the U.S. and Canada. Edible Communities is dedicated to telling the stories and sustaining the efforts of the farmers, chefs, food artisans, fishers, winemakers, brewers and home cooks who feed us.

Our publications celebrate local food, season by season, community by community. Our motto is: Building communities one dish, one recipe, one story at a time. Our mission is: To transform the way communities shop for, cook, eat and relate to the food that is grown and produced in their area. For more information, please visit: www.ediblecommunities.com.

Edible Inland Northwest is published quarterly. Each issue emphasizes the current season with a focus on Eastern Washington, including Spokane, its largest city and headquarters of Edible Inland Northwest, as well as Yakima, Walla Walla, Tri-Cities, Wenatchee, Chelan, Leavenworth and Pullman.

We look for subjects that are both timely and traditional, and we have a special interest in topics that relate to the full breadth of our mission. The editorial board chooses writers and topics for each issue with the intention of nurturing a wide and loyal readership within our coverage area. The primary qualification for contributors is an ability to write in a lively, elegant, informative, original, accurate and interesting manner.

To demonstrate this, potential contributors should submit food-related writing samples along with a brief biography detailing their interests, professional and educational background and publishing experience.

Please also fill out our pitch form and include a list of topics you would like to write about, along with a brief description of the content and approach you would take. Please include a possible nut graph and list of potential sources.

Recipes to accompany articles are highly desirable, but they must be original and carefully tested. If they are not original, permission for reprint must be obtained and paid for by the submitter. Likewise, all sources for information in the article should be cited, and if passages from published material—including material published on the Web—are included, permission for use must be obtained.

Articles can range in size from around 500 to 1,500 words, with the length determined by the editorial board. Payment is based on complexity and polish of the submitted article. In some cases, the publisher will negotiate a set fee for an article in advance, but writers submitting for the first time should not expect a commitment until their final draft has been approved. Stories are assigned two to five months in advance of the issue date. If you are interested in writing for Edible Inland Northwest, please consider that time frame.

It is preferred for materials to be submitted by email or via our online submission form. When submitting your query, please include your full postal and email address and attach your writing sample, recipe, bio and story ideas in a Word document or as a PDF file. Find our submission form here: www.edibleinlandnw.com/contribute/
