Spokane’s Best Cookies

Is it soft or crispy? Thick or thin? Some might argue that a soft, chewy cookie — warm from the oven with a slightly gooey center — hits the spot, while others firmly believe that a crisp, crunchy texture is the hallmark of a great cookie.

But first, what makes the perfect cookie?

(jump to the list of Spokane’s Best Cookies)

Should a cookie be a delicate, airy treat or hearty and robust? For many, the ideal cookie strikes a balance — slightly crisp edges giving way to a chewy, satisfying center.

I almost wish I could ask you as you read this: What makes the perfect cookie? Since I can't hear your responses, I reached out to a few local bakers to get their expert insights.

Callie Johnson from Made With Love Bakery says, “What makes a good cookie is different for everyone, in my opinion. Some people like really soft cookies, while others prefer very crispy ones.”

Boots Bakery says, “Texture. A little crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Flavor as well, of course!”

“A good cookie is all about the art of the bake. Each variety has its requirements for a perfect bake; achieving that with every cookie is our white whale,” says Rachel Postlewait of Rocket Bakery.

The Grain Shed adds that a good cookie requires “great ingredients and the right amount of crisp and softness.”

Sandos says, “a good cookie relies on texture and balanced flavor. We want the cookie to have a nice soft middle and chewy edges. Our cookies should not just be sweet but have some complexity.”

The perfect cookie is waiting for you, carefully crafted by local bakers who pour their hearts into every batch. Celebrate the season with the best sweet treats from these hometown favorites.
