Spokane Winery Association: A Community of Local Winemakers

Spokane Winery Association: A Community of Local Winemakers

BY NOELLE LOPARCO

Sniff, swirl, sniff, sip, swish, swallow, close eyes in pleasure, repeat.

These eight actions can allow one to enjoy a wine on their own, but when performed alongside others, they open the door to a communal experience. By sharing a toast, taste or bottle, wine can be a conduit for deeply rooted community connections.

Culinary creativity is certainly making waves in Spokane, but how much do we all really know about our rising wine stars?

The Spokane Winery Association has been working with local wineries for over 20 years, forging a society of stories, networking a web of winemaking wisdom, and connecting the dots from vineyard to vintner to vino-lover. Mike Conway, owner and resident Winemaker at Latah Creek Wine Cellars, founded this association in the 1980’s to establish a network for area winemakers to share ideas and support.

The SWA is currently spearheaded by four phenomenal women in wine – Latah Creek’s Natalie Barnes, Mike’s daughter, served as President for several years, recently handing over those duties to Patricia Butterfield of Winescape Winery. Winemaker Sarah Lathrop of Liberty Lake Cellars and Event Coordinator Denise Hendricks of Helix Wine round out the team. Each of these women brings their passion, wisdom, intelligence, refinement of craft and years of know-how to our community of wine enthusiasts.

If ever you have desired an incredible wine tasting experience like those glorious romantic scenes of Napa bathed in golden light seen in movies and marketing campaigns, fear not, you can save yourself the travel and visit one of our local wineries. Maybe the romantic vibe isn’t your cup of tea and you’d prefer a night out with live music or a casual afternoon with dogs in tow.

The Spokane Winery Association is here to help!

Each of the 14 participating Spokane wineries has a unique atmosphere and is happy to point you to another one of their peers to match whatever type of wine-enjoying experience you’re hoping to have–they can even help you tour several wineries in one day! The SWA is happy to organize any kind of outing to suit your palate.

So before you decide on jet-setting to Piedmont or Provence, consider making a connection over wine produced a little closer to home.
