This story is a part of our collection The Craft of Cattle.
What are you known for?
For being awesome LOL. Just kidding, kinda. We raise all natural, grass fed red angus beef. We sell breeding stock to other ranches and locker and boxed beef direct to the consumer.
What type of cattle do you raise and why?
Red angus, because they're a docile breed that performs well on grass and is famous for its delicious, marbled meat
How long have you been raising this cattle?
For about 40 years for this breed. Been raising cattle for 4 generations starting with my great-grandfather. We've farmed in this area for 5 generations total and have cousins farming on different farms in this county.
What is a favorite story from the ranch?
When one of our top cows was going to be a first time momma. I went down to check on the girls and found her in labor. She was laid on her belly and the calf was just starting to show. I went up beside her and dropped down to my knees and scratched her behind the ear. She then proceeded to roll on her side, lay her head out across my lap and began softly mooing. I sat there, petting her with her head across my lap for the entire delivery.
What do you want our readers to know about you and/or why should they consider where their beef comes from and how it is raised?
Buying direct from a farm does not mean you are getting any better quality than you would from a store. We encourage our customers to come out and meet their beef and learn about the holistic approach we use in raising healthy, calm cattle. Good quality beef starts before conception, from making sure the grasses you grow are nutritious to the genetics in your cattle. It all takes careful consideration and intensive monitoring.
Why did you decide to enter into this field and/or what is your "why" for continuing?
I was born into it and don't know any better LOL. Honestly, it's hard work for little money but at the end of the day watching the cows graze in the pasture or sharing an amazing sunset with your family makes it all worth it.
Is your beef featured at any local restaurants and/or how can our readers find your product?
No, we started selling direct, with people in mind and prefer to keep it that way.
Anything else you'd like to share?
We run around 125 cows and keep the majority of their calves till they are yearlings. All of the cattle we sell are born here and all of the feed is raised on our farm. Currently we operate around 2,700 acres with 3 generations of family working on the ranch.
