Big Table Serves Hope to Local Hospitality Workers
“We serve hope to those who serve us,” in big bold letters filled the screen as stories of impact were shared with hundreds of supporters at Big Table’s annual fundraiser Eats Around the World. As one would expect, the menu was well crafted and distinct, representing different regions.
Upon arrival, guests were presented with a passport and invited to sample appetizers from around the globe, collecting stamps along the way. Eat Good Group, Northern Quest Resort & Casino and US Foods donated their time and talents to serve fare inspired by Greece, Jamaica and the Philippines to the eager eaters.
Food and drink have an amazing power to bring people together, but Big Table used the evening to inform the audience about the deep need for support of the people who make the local food and drink scene thrive.
“Big Table exists to see the lives of those working in the restaurant and hospitality industry transformed by building community and caring for those who are in crisis, transition, or falling through the cracks,” their mission reads.
The restaurant and hospitality industry is the fourth largest employment sector in Spokane County and continues to grow.
What one might not know is that 1 in 6 restaurant workers lives below the poverty line—double any other working population.
Fundraising efforts that evening raised over $250 thousand for Big Table to complete their care missions for industry workers through timely interventions, intentional relationships and transformational care.
As the holidays approach, consider serving those who serve us, too.
